Surgery Center of Oklahoma vs Medellin: The Fairest US-Colombia Price Comparison

Most US-vs-abroad comparisons cheat by using hospital list prices nobody pays. Surgery Center of Oklahoma publishes real all-in cash prices. Put those next to Medellin and the comparison gets honest, and more interesting.

Short version

Surgery Center of Oklahoma made its name by doing something US hospitals do not: posting a single all-in cash price for each procedure, surgeon and anesthesia and facility included, no surprise bills. That makes it the only fair US comparator for medical tourism. Comparing Colombia to a hospital chargemaster, where a gallbladder removal is listed at $40,000, is easy and dishonest. Comparing Colombia to SCO is harder and worth doing.

SCO's prices change and are published on their own site; the figures below are their posted ranges as generally reported for 2025-2026, rounded. Check the current list before relying on any single number. Medellin figures are typical 2026 ranges at accredited private clinics and hospitals, not quotes.

Head to head, surgery only

ProcedureSCO posted cash price (approx.)Medellin typical 2026Gap
Inguinal hernia repair$3,500 - $4,500$1,800 - $3,00030% - 50%
Laparoscopic gallbladder$5,500 - $6,500$2,800 - $4,50030% - 50%
Knee arthroscopy$4,000 - $5,500$2,200 - $3,80030% - 45%
Carpal tunnel release$2,500 - $3,000$1,100 - $1,90035% - 55%
ACL reconstruction$8,000 - $9,500$4,500 - $7,00025% - 45%
Rotator cuff repair$8,000 - $10,000$4,500 - $7,50025% - 45%
Total knee replacement$15,000 - $20,000$9,000 - $14,00030% - 45%
Total hip replacement$15,000 - $20,000$9,500 - $15,00025% - 40%

That is a very different picture from "70 percent savings." The 70 percent number is real when the comparison is a hospital bill. Against a transparent US cash surgical center, Colombia's advantage on general and orthopedic surgery is roughly 25 to 55 percent before you buy a plane ticket.

Where it lands

CaseSCO all-inMedellin all-in with travelVerdict
Inguinal hernia, solo, 5 nights$3,500 - $4,500$2,600 - $4,600Roughly even. If you can drive to Oklahoma, do that.
Gallbladder, solo, 6 nights$5,500 - $6,500$3,600 - $6,100Slight edge Colombia; not decisive.
ACL, solo, 10 nights$8,000 - $9,500$5,600 - $9,000Colombia, modestly.
Knee replacement, with companion, 18 nights$15,000 - $20,000$11,500 - $18,500Colombia, and by more if you use the nights for PT.
Two procedures, one trip (e.g. hernia + carpal tunnel)$6,000 - $7,500$3,700 - $6,100Colombia, clearly. Travel cost amortizes.

What SCO does not include that Colombia usually does

SCO's bundle is surgeon, anesthesia, facility, and standard follow-up. It excludes hardware for joint replacements in some listings, pre-op imaging, and physical therapy. Colombian hospital quotes for joint replacement typically bundle the implant (with brand named) and include the first PT sessions. Read both bundles line by line before deciding the SCO number is lower.

What Colombia does not include that SCO does

Proximity. If something goes wrong at week three, SCO is a drive. Medellin is a flight. Complication rates at accredited Colombian hospitals are comparable to US centers, and the WHO ranked Colombia's system #1 in the Western Hemisphere and #22 globally in the 2000 World Health Report. But distance is a real cost, and the honest comparison says so.

When Colombia is the clear answer

For orthopedic cases the Colombia Orthopedics guide covers hospitals and implant brands. The estimator will run your nights and city. And if the answer for your case is "go to Oklahoma," Andy will tell you that. The hub for the whole network is Colombia Medical.

Questions people ask

Is surgery in Colombia cheaper than Surgery Center of Oklahoma?

On surgery alone, typically 25 to 55 percent cheaper for general and orthopedic procedures. After flights and nights, short procedures come out roughly even; multi-day, combined, and cosmetic cases still favor Colombia clearly.

Why compare to SCO instead of hospital prices?

SCO publishes real all-in cash prices. Hospital chargemaster rates are list prices almost nobody pays, and comparisons built on them exaggerate savings.

What does the SCO price include?

Surgeon, anesthesia, facility, and standard follow-up. Hardware, imaging, and physical therapy may be extra. Colombian hospital quotes often bundle the implant and first PT sessions.

Should I fly to Colombia for a hernia repair?

If a transparent US cash center is within driving distance, probably not; the numbers are close. If it is not, or if you are combining procedures, Colombia usually wins.

How long do I stay in Colombia for a knee replacement?

Fourteen to twenty-one nights, using the extra days for physical therapy at $15 to $35 per session.

Are complication rates in Colombia comparable to the US?

At accredited hospitals with board-certified surgeons, published outcomes are comparable. Colombia has six JCI-accredited hospitals and ranked #22 globally in the WHO 2000 report.

Prices in this article are typical 2026 ranges observed across accredited Colombian clinics, not quotes. Colombia ranks #1 in the Western Hemisphere and #22 globally in the WHO World Health Report (2000); pair that with current JCI hospital accreditation and a ReTHUS check on any surgeon you consider. Nothing here is medical advice.
